Did you ever wonder, where the materials for your jewellery come from?
Under what circumstances and with which chemical substances they are gained from under the Earth’s crust?
Unfortunately, precious metal and gemstone mining is often linked with exploitation and environmental pollution. Mining communities lack sanitation, access to drinking water, health care or schooling, and child labour is not uncommon.
What if it were possible to produce 100% responsible and fair jewellery by using biodegradable and fair materials?
With the project RESPONSIBILITY, I explored a new, sustainable and easy-to-produce material: bioplastics. By mixing simple ingredients s.a. starch, glycerin, vinegar, food colouring and spices, I obtained a completely biodegradable (and even edible) material characterised by bright colours and a plastic-like look and feel.
Different drying techniques resulted in many different shapes and textures, opening many creative possibilities. Combining the bioplastics with Fairmined silver and steel wire resulted in a colourful and playful brooch collection of five unique pieces.
